Federal Government has pledged to support the production of made-in-Nigeria tricycles to boost the transportation sector in the country.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, made the pledge in Abuja, at the weekend, when he received the Association of Tricycles Owners of Nigeria who paid him a courtesy visit.

He said the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), an agency under his ministry, was carrying out research to improve the efficiency and performance of its made-in-Nigeria tricycles through the use of solar energy.

Onu asserted that NASENI’s Tricycle would meet the needs of Nigerians based on the present administration’s determination to build a self-reliant economy and promote economic diversification.

“We have the intellectual capacity to create jobs and wealth for our people and need your support in developing the capacity to attain high level of self-reliance,” the minister said.

Praising the contributions of the association in the transportation of goods and persons across the country, the minister promised to support the members to achieve their noble goals.

He expressed willingness to work with the body in the best interest of Nigeria.

Earlier, Ike Samuel, the national treasurer of the association, had said the association was indebted to the Federal Government for giving approval for the association to operate as a trade union.

Ike thanked the Federal Government for its various youth empowerment programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and social vices.

He assured the minister of the association’s readiness to partner the Federal Government in actualising its objectives in job creation and poverty reduction across the country.
