Lawmakers, who lost their seats, want to impeach Gov Fubara – Ikenga Ugochinyere
*Perceives attempt to judiciary to legitimize unconstitutional actions in Rivers *Says it must not be allowed
Through his comments, Ugochinyere sought to emphasize that any effort to remove Governor Fubara by these lawmakers should not be entertained, as their defection undermines their authority to initiate such a move. He expressed doubt about the feasibility of their efforts, encouraging them to proceed if they are confident in their position and hinting at the unlikelihood of success.
House of Represrntatives Member, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, recently shared his perspective on the ongoing conflict between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and a Martin Amaewhule-led group of 27 lawmakers, said to have lost their rights to be called members of the Rivers State House of Assembly having defected from PeoplesDemocraticParty(PDP) to the All ProgressivesCongress(APC).
During a live broadcast by Symfoni TV, according to a video posted on YouTube, Ugochinyere made it clear that he does not believe the Amaewhule-led faction should be allowed to proceed with their plans to impeach Governor Fubara.
Ugochinyere argued that these lawmakers forfeited their positions when they switched their allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, their defection effectively invalidates their status as lawmakers, making any attempt at impeachment unfounded. Ugochinyere highlighted that the constitution clearly outlines the consequences of defection, especially regarding the legitimacy of those who switch parties.
In Ugochinyere’s words: “These lawmakers have left their political party, everybody saw it. The constitution is very clear, but somebody wants to use the judiciary to give them legitimacy to continue to cause nuisance. What are we fighting over? Those (27 Lawmakers) who decamped and lost their seats want to impeach Governor Fubara. Come and do it and let us see.
“Get everything you want and let us see how it will work.”
His statement underscores his frustration with the situation, especially as he perceives it as an attempt to use judicial intervention to legitimize actions he views as unconstitutional.
