Lagos indigenes in GAC must stand firm against Obasa’s rumored return – Group

If the rumored reinstatement of Mudashiru Ajaiyi Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly becomes reality, it would suggest that Lagos indigenes within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) have compromised their stance — becoming what K1 De Ultimate once referred to as GANUSIans.
These were the words of Assembly of Lagos Youths, in reaction to Sunday media reports revealing how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered lawmakers in the state, who removed Obasa through an election in the House on January 13, 2025, to reinstate him with immediate effect.
The hand of First Lady Remi Tinubu was also allegedly found in the how the former speaker’s comeback game was being staged. But the Assembly of Lagos Youths kicked against such move, in case it was true.
In the statement signed by Lasisi Robert, leader of the group, it was said that since the embattled Agege Constituency I lawmaker was duly ousted through lawful means, reinstating him while reasons for his removal – namely allegations of corruption and abuse of power – remain unaddressed will be counterproductive.
“Obasa was lawfully removed on January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 39 honorable members of the House, following allegations of gross misconduct.
“His removal was widely celebrated by well-meaning Lagosians who had grown weary of his power-drunk tendencies and hostility toward perceived opponents.
“For Lagos indigenes, his removal also marked a crucial step toward bridging the long-standing divide between indigenes and non-indigenes in the state’s governance.
“Prominent traditional rulers and key figures within the GAC, including Pa Tajudeen Olusi, publicly endorsed this decision as a progressive move.
“However, recent media reports suggesting that Obasa may be reinstated—despite his removal being backed by the House—indicate a blatant disregard for due process and the will of Lagosians.
“His return would not only undermine the credibility of the GAC but also expose its members as opportunists willing to reverse their stance to serve personal interests.
“We, therefore, demand continued support for Rt. Hon. Maranda and strong opposition to any attempt to impose Obasa on the House against the will of its members.
“Furthermore, we urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to respect the voice of Lagos indigenes and refrain from any interference that would undermine their will by forcing Obasa’s return,” the Group said.
In an earlier report, one of the concerned persons who reacted to the report had said, “If the former speaker Mr. Obasa returns lagosians should protest. This is a big lesson to every Lagosian, particularly Omo IBILE Eko. It may not be too late for the craftsman when nemesis could catch up with him with all the arrays of unknown infractions that could confront him in the power game.”
