IGP Video: More knocks for PUNCH, as Young Professionals say: “You goofed seriously”
The Nigeria media, especially renowned print media, has been called upon to verify their stories before publications to avoid sullying their hard-earned reputation.
This was contained in a press release by the National Coordinator of United Young Professionals, Adewole Kehinde, in reaction to a news report in Saturday PUNCH captioned “IG’s Trending Video: Journalist Goes Into Hiding.” He said the publication was not only false but an attempt to cast IGP Ibrahim Idris in bad light and embarrass the Police leadership.
“We can authoritatively tell Nigerians and Saturday PUNCH that the Kano State Police Command never invited nor threatened the Liberty Television journalist, Aminu Nurudeen. The Inspector General of Police is a man that respects the freedom of the media,” Adewole said.
“It is not true that Nurudeen’s whereabouts had been unknown as he is in his office in Kano doing his work without threat or any form of harassment from any quarter whatsoever.
Adewole said Saturday PUNCH goofed by saying the IGP’s speech brought an abrupt end to the event. “The IGP successfully commissioned the COBWEB Intelligence Platform in Kano after his speech, and there was nothing like abruptness in the way the event ended,” he said.
Adewole further said that the IGP never ordered an investigation into the release of the doctored videos as that was a figment of the imagination of the PUNCH Reporter.
“It is unfortunate that by its own act of indiscretion, PUNCH Newspaper has punched its reputation to attract derision, mockery and insults to its corporate image,” the statement concluded.
