The Federal government through the Federal Mortgage Bank (FMB) is set to deliver affordable houses for low income earners in the country through the Defence City Project.

Managing Director of the Defence City Project, Sanusi Maikudi Garba, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja at the 6th meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing, and Urban development conference organised by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

Garba said about 200,000 housing were to be delivered within 36 months as a pilot scheme and each state in the country will get about 1,000 housing units.

He said the project, a Public Private Partnership scheme, has already taken off in Abuja and Kaduna respectively.

“The work will be easy for us if the state governments can give us lands free of all charges so that we can make the houses affordable to more citizens in the country.

“The good thing about it is that the house will be mortgaged when the structure is put up and the owner can complete to his own taste and at his speed. And we have what we call up to 5% responsibility to the host community, we will deliver 5% of the houses that we build so we can create a relationship between ourselves and the host communities” he said.
