ECOWAS orders standby force against military junta in Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Second Extraordinary Summit on Republic Niger has ended with an order for the Committee of the bloc Chiefs of Defense Staff to activate a standby force to restore constitutional order in the country.

The order was contained in a communiqué of the Summit, attended by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja on Thursday August 10, 2023.

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Omar Alieu Touray, reading communiqué of the Summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at the end of the meeting in Abuja, on Thursday August 10, 2023.

 

Read by President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, the communiqué stated that that the Summit too decisions as follows:

“Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand-by force with all its elements immediately.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means,” the resolution reads.
