President Bola Tinubu, accompanied by a delegation of 1,411 individuals, did not address COP28 in Dubai, raising questions about his absence from the global climate change gathering.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, clarified that Tinubu’s non-appearance during his scheduled speaking slot was due to various commitments at the ongoing event.
Tuggar defended President Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria prioritizes tangible actions over official rhetoric, stating that, “Nigeria is 100 percent for action.”
He emphasized a shift away from elaborate statements and pledged a commitment to substantial measures in addressing climate change.
Tuggar criticized repetitive speeches at the conference, proclaiming that, “Nigeria is saying enough is enough, it’s time for action.”
Addressing Tinubu’s decision to forgo his speaking opportunity, Tuggar explained that the president waited in the hall but opted not to deliver the speech.
President Tinubu discerned that other engagements awaited his attention and promised to be more productive.
The minister highlighted Tinubu’s presence and willingness to contribute, framing the choice as a strategic decision to prioritize impactful commitments.
Scheduled for a prominent role at the World Climate Action Summit on Friday, Tinubu did not take the stage alongside other heads of state.
As controversy surrounds Nigeria’s substantial delegation to the climate conference, Tuggar’s statements aim to convey a shift in Nigeria’s approach from symbolic declarations to concrete climate action.
