*Tells why he won’t comply with EU’s demands that contradict political and economic values of Hungary

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban believes that Russian special military operation in Ukraine will last for a long time and will have extremely difficult consequences for the situation in entire Europe, he said, speaking before the parliament Monday, adding that the world has entered “a decade of dangers and wars.”

The conflict in Ukraine “will last for a long time and will pose a constant threat to Hungary’s security,” Orban said. “A picture of a decade of wars is unfolding before our eyes,” he said, according to MTI.

Orban added that he would be glad to be mistaken, but “one must act out of the reality, not our wishes.” In this regard, he called on all sides of the conflict to cease fire immediately and begin negotiations.

He also noted that the events in Ukraine, combined with Western sanctions against Russia, impact the global economy in an extremely negative way.

According to the Prime Minister, the sanctions lead to an energy crisis, which, combined with increasing bank interest rates open “an age of recession” and high inflation in Europe.

Orban promised that the new government of Hungary will do everything possible to respond to these global challenges and ensure Hungary’s security.

In this regard, he warned that he will not comply with EU’s demands that contradict political and economic values of Hungary. Budapest intends to “protect its rights” before Brussels, he said. Nevertheless, Hungary does not imagine itself outside of the EU and believes that “its dreams can only be realized” within this association.

Orban delivered his speech after the lawmakers reelected him as Prime Minister for four more years with an overwhelming majority. On April 3, his Fidesz party secured a convincing victory in parliamentary elections; in early May, the president ordered Orban to form a new government.
