Buratai mourns predecessor, ex-Army chief Victor Malu, who dies Monday

Nigeria’s sitting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has formally reacted and, on behalf of officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army, expressed condolences over the death early Monday of one of his predecessors, Lt. Gen. Victor Samuel Leonard Malu, describing the passage of the late former Army chief as shocking.

Malu, who was born in 15 January 1947, died October 9, 2017 at the age 70.

The condolences were contained in a statement issued at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday, by the Director, Army Public Rations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman.

Kukasheka Usman said in the statement, copy of which was obtained by The DEFENDER Monday night, that the Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, “has received with deep shock the sad news of the passing away of the former Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Samuel Victor Malu (rtd), who died today, 9th October 2017 at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt.”

Late Lieutenant General Samuel Victor Malu, Buratai noted, was the Chief of Army Staff between May 1999 and April 2001, adding that during his service, he contributed immensely to the sustenance of democracy, peace and security in the country.

“The Chief of Army Staff on behalf of the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army commiserates with the family on the irreparable loss.

“He prays God Almighty to grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” the statement said.
