Buhari will be remembered as President who never interfered with electoral process – Ricketts

By BASHIR ADEFAKA

Chief Akin Ricketts, National Chairman of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), an opposition coalition party currently awaiting registration by Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed his profound sorrow following the passing of former President Major General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, Retired, who died in a London clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

This was disclosed in a statement from his Media Office, signed by Essien Emmanuel and circulated to the media.

Reflecting on the legacy of President Buhari, Ricketts stated, “President Muhammadu Buhari, often characterized as Mr. Integrity, will be remembered for his commitment to ensuring that institutions operate according to the rule of law. He steadfastly refused to interfere in the electoral process, an action that underscores his dedication to democracy.”

Ricketts noted that the late President understood the severe implications of electoral interference. “He recognized that election riggers become enemies of the people, as rigging fundamentally denies citizens the right to make their own choices at the polls. This creates a society that suffers from a breakdown of trust and loyalty between the government and its citizens,” he explained.

The former NPA Chairman went on to highlight Buhari’s enduring commitment to democracy, stating, “Major General Muhammadu Buhari is deserving of the title ‘President Emeritus’, as he believed in empowering Nigerian voters to select their representatives freely, despite being the flagbearer of one political party in a competitive landscape.”

Ricketts praised Buhari’s love for Nigeria, particularly in terms of his contributions to infrastructure. “His successful reforms led to the revitalization of the country’s railway system, passionately managed by his Minister of Transportation, Chief Rotimi Amaechi. The modern double-gauge railways linking Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Abeokuta-Ibadan stand as testaments to his vision and leadership.”

He further acknowledged Buhari’s economic stewardship during challenging times, stating, “President Buhari inherited a country plagued by recession and a plummeting crude oil price of $25 per barrel. Despite these challenges, he skillfully navigated the economic landscape and initiated policies that fostered agricultural self-sufficiency through the ‘Made-in-Nigeria’ initiative, ensuring that our nation could withstand the pressures of global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Regarding infrastructure development, Ricketts remarked that although Buhari could not address every need, he made significant strides. “The work completed on critical roadways, including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and others, exemplifies the efforts made under his administration. It is clear that he set a foundation for his successors to build upon.”

He concluded his statement by urging reflection on Buhari’s legacy, stating, “The passing of President Buhari serves as a poignant reminder for all, including his successors: how one is remembered is shaped by the actions taken today. May God Almighty grant former President Muhammadu Buhari eternal peace and admit his gentle soul into Al-Jannah Firdaus.”
