Zamfara State House of Assembly has announced the impeachment of the state Deputy Governor, Barr. Mahdi Aliyu Gusau.
This followed submission of report by the investigation panel set up to hear the allegations of misappropriation, abuse of office and official misconducts levelled against him by the state House of Assembly.
Making the announcement, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mu’azu Magarya, said the legislative arm, while discharging its constitutional responsibility, did not leave any stone unturned in order to be fair in its investigations before arriving at the conclusion to impeach.
According to Speaker Magarya, the Assembly “has now declared the office of the deputy governor of the state vacant”.
This development, according to our Zamfara State Correspondent, was also confirmed by Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Zamfara State Chapter, Alhaji Yusuf Idris Gusau.
In announcing the impeachment on Wednesday, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, the Director General, Press Affairs and Public Relations to the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly in a statement dated Wednesday 23/02/2022, said:
“The state House of Assembly in its resumed plenary today (Wednesday) impeached Barr Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as the Deputy Governor of the state with immediate effect.
“This followed the recommendation of the investigative panel set up to investigate all the allegations levelled against the former Deputy Governor that found him guilty of the offences levelled against him which was submitted earlier today in the House and was subsequently read at the floor of the chamber by the speaker of the House Rt Hon Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya.
“Magarya told the plenary that the committee set up to investigate the former deputy governor found him guilty of all the charges levelled against him, and directed his colleagues to proceed with individual voting of affirmation for the Deputy Governor to be impeached as required by the law.
“The clerk to House Shehu Saidu Anka there nd then constitute a voting panel where each and every member is being called in alphabetical constituencies to affirm his vote where twenty (20) out of twenty members (22) voted in favour of the impeachment while the only PDP member of the House Hon Salihu Usman Zurmi was conspicuously absent during today’s plenary.
“Having secured the required number of the votes as directed by the constitution of the land ,speaker Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya annouced the impeachment of Barr Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as the subtentive Deputy Governor of the state.
“The House has adjourned plenary to an hour time from now waiting for the passing of the resolution to the executive and also expected a communication for the nomination of the new Deputy Governor from the executive to the legislature for his screening and confirmation as the law requires.”
