Lieutenant Moutari Saadou Yahaya of the Niger Armed Forces has reportedly been declared wanted over his alleged involvement in the attempted military mutiny that rocked Niger’s capital, Niamey, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
According to a report attributed to TAH News Network, the lieutenant was being sought in connection with the events that unfolded in Niamey during the early hours of Saturday, when heavy gunfire and explosions were reported around strategic military and government installations.
The reported development comes as Nigerien authorities continue investigations into the failed attempt to challenge the military government headed by General Abdourahamane Tiani.
Gunfire rocked Niamey
The unrest began in the early hours of August 29, with sustained gunfire and explosions heard across several parts of Niamey.
Reuters reported that mutinous soldiers attacked the area around Diori Hamani International Airport and the presidential complex, while state television and radio were temporarily taken off air.
The fighting also centred on Base 101, a major military installation located near the airport.
Niger’s Defence Minister, General Salifou Mody, later said soldiers had broken away from military order, detained some of their colleagues at Base 101 and opened fire on sensitive sites in the capital. He said loyalist forces moved to contain the mutiny and gradually restored control.
Officer reportedly sought
Against that background, TAH News Network reportedly identified Lieutenant Moutari Saadou Yahaya as one of the officers wanted over the incident.

Reuters reported that security sources said mutinous soldiers were still present at the airport several hours after the initial clashes, although the Defence Ministry said government forces were progressively retaking targeted sites.
The incident represents a significant internal challenge for Tiani’s military government, which seized power in the July 2023 coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum.

The reported identification of Lieutenant Yahaya has also triggered strong reactions, particularly among those who view the mutiny as a betrayal of Niger’s military leadership.
