BORGU INSECURITY: Onochie Calls on Tinubu to Protect Communities, Rescue Abducted Worshippers

Former presidential aide Lauretta Onochie has raised concerns over worsening insecurity in Borgu, Niger State, following the reported abduction of worshippers during Friday prayers.
In a statement titled, “Terror: Jagaban Borgu, Borgu Is Under Siege”, published on her website Monday August 24, 2026, Onochie called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who holds the traditional title of Jagaban of Borgu, to urgently address the security situation in the area.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) frontline woman said the reported invasion of a mosque and abduction of worshippers underscored the growing threat facing residents, farmers, travellers and communities across Niger State.
Onochie argued that President Tinubu’s responsibilities extend beyond his traditional title, noting that as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he has a constitutional responsibility to protect Nigerians.
She also called on Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to intensify efforts to secure residents and demand stronger federal intervention.
According to her, repeated attacks, kidnappings and insecurity have eroded public confidence and are threatening farming, commerce, freedom of movement and religious worship.
Onochie urged the Federal Government to move beyond condemnations and promises, demanding stronger intelligence gathering, surveillance, rapid-response operations and coordinated efforts to dismantle kidnapping and bandit networks.
She said the people of Borgu and Niger State needed concrete security measures rather than political statements.
“Protect the people. Rescue the abducted. Pursue the perpetrators. Restore the authority of the Nigerian state,” Onochie said.
She stressed that the Federal Government would ultimately be judged by its ability to protect citizens and restore security across vulnerable communities.
