Governorship aspirant in the last All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti, Hon. Bamidele Opeyemi, was on Friday shot in his arm and leg at a welcome rally for former National Publicity Secretary of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and ex-Minister, Dayo Adeyeye, who defected from the PDP to the APC in the state.
It was gathered that Opeyemi was at the podium with Ekiti State APC Governorship Candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Adeyeye when the gunshots were fired.
A top source said the bullets hit Opeyemi in his arm and leg as he went down. He was immediately rushed to the Ekiti State Hospital.
The gunshots were said to have emanated from the gun of an unknown gunman at the rally at the APC Secretariat in Ado-Ekiti to usher Adeyeye to the APC fold.
Opeyemi was rushed to the hospital in the vehicle of Fayemi, where he is now in critical condition and battling for life.
The honourable was not the only one affected as, it was gathered, another person, who was at the front on the podium was also hit by bullets and is seriously in fatal state and might die.
“The man was at the front of the podium and was hit severally by bullets. He was already in comma and has lost so much blood before he was rushed to the hospital,” a source said.
The shooting at the APC secretariat immediately brought to an inglorious end the rally to usher in Adeyeye to the APC fold in Ekiti.
Some APC sources however claimed that Fayemi was the target of the gun attacks.
A source, who spoke on the sad event, said it was an attempt to frustrate Adeyeye, a figure in the state PDP, coming into the APC.
He said, “Now that the welcome rally for Adeyeye has ended this way, the sponsors of this attack may think they have achieved their aim but they have failed anyway,” he said.
Another respondent asked to react to the development did not mince word saying, “The only man that is desperate in Ekiti State politics is Governor Ayodele Fayose. So, the Police should not be intimidated by his vituperations. You will see that he will not talk now that this has happened. But the Police should not be deceived by his silence, they should grill him. His hands are not clean on this,” he said on condition of anonymity.
