Armenian top diplomat, Russian ambassador discuss situation in Nagorno-Karabakh

Ararat Mirzoyan noted that it was important that Russian peacekeepers had taken concrete measures “to stop the invasion of Azerbaijani units into the zone of responsibility of the peacekeeping contingent and ensured withdrawal of Azerbaijani armed forces”

 

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Russian Ambassador to that country Sergey Kopyrkin met on Monday to discuss the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan’s intrusion into the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers, the Armenian foreign ministry said.

“Ararat Mirzoyan and Sergey Kopyrkin discussed the situation following the intrusion of Azerbaijani troops near the village of Parukh in Nagorno-Karabakh in the zone of responsibility of Russian peacekeepers. The minister stressed the importance of the reaction from Russia’s corresponding agencies to Azerbaijan’s intrusion,” it said.

The minister also noted that it is important that Russian peacekeepers take concrete measures “to stop the invasion of Azerbaijani units into the zone of responsibility of the peacekeeping contingent and ensure withdrawal of Azerbaijani armed forces.”

The Russian defense ministry reported on March 26 that Azerbaijani troops had entered the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh.

On Sunday, the Russian defense ministry said that Azerbaijan had withdrawn its troops from th settlement of Farukh (Parukh) in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Escalation in Karabakh

The Armenian foreign ministry said earlier that Azerbaijani troops had intruded into the village of Parukh, the Askeran District of Nagorno-Karabakh at about 15:00 Moscow time on Thursday. Yerevan accused Baku of disrupting gas supply to Nagorno-Karabakh in the area of Shusha.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Under the document, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides stopped at the positions that they had held and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the engagement line in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor that connects Armenia with the enclave to exercise control of the ceasefire observance. Apart from that, a number of districts came over to Baku’s control.
