The All Progressives Congress (APC) has ruled out the possibility of granting automatic tickets to serving members of the National Assembly as preparations intensify for its 2026 primaries, reaffirming its stance on internal democracy and competitive candidate selection.
According to reports by major national newspapers, the proposal—reportedly backed by some federal lawmakers seeking guaranteed renomination—failed to secure support from both the party’s national leadership and the Presidency.
While proponents argued that automatic tickets would ensure legislative continuity, opposition within the party has been strong, with key stakeholders describing the idea as inconsistent with democratic principles.
Recent engagements between the APC National Chairman and members of the National Assembly caucus further clarified the party’s position.

Sources within the APC indicate that adopting automatic tickets could weaken accountability, sideline grassroots participation, and foster perceptions of entitlement among incumbents. There are also concerns that bypassing the primary process could spark internal disputes and undermine party cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The stance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is widely seen as supportive of due process and party unity, with emphasis on inclusiveness and adherence to established nomination procedures rather than preferential treatment.
With the rejection of automatic tickets now clear, all aspirants—including incumbent Senators and House of Representatives members—are expected to participate fully in the primaries.
The APC’s 2026 nomination process is therefore shaping up to be competitive and reflective of the will of party members rather than determined by incumbency.
