The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria, amidst cries against its incessant strike actions of parents and prospective students yearning for better future, on Monday May 9, 2022, may have further compounded the situation as it extends its down tool fresh 12 weeks.
ASUU President,, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, announced this in a statement issue after it failed to reach a compromise with the Federal Government, which has continued to tell the union what it believes is better way to go.
Osodeke said his union’s extension by this yet another long stretch of out-of-work that has further complicated issues for the learning system in the universities, was to give the government enough time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues that led to the strike that had already lasted more than 12 weeks.
According to him, the union stressed in its statement that the roll-over strike became effective from 12.01 am, May 8, 2021.
He said the the union took this decision after its National Executive Council meeting which started on Sunday night at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja.
Following this development, some Nigerians, in mixed reactions, have taken to the social media throwing blame games. While some blame the Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government for what they called its negligence to the nation’s educational sector, others say ASUU leaders need to address clear to tell Nigerians what exactly is their justification for attempting to demolish the education system in the country.
