A visiting delegation from the African Union (AU) has donated $100,000 to the PCNI to assist the coordination agency in its rebuilding efforts in the North. The donation was made during a courtesy call to the Acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Dr. Habiba Lawal, late Thursday.
In a statement made available to press men by the Head of Media and Communications in the Office of the SGF, Alkasim Abdulkadir said the SGF in her welcome address thanked the delegation for the visit and added that it was a testament of the brotherhood of the African Union in their continued interest and support in resolving the humanitarian crisis in the North East.
The delegation was led by Amb Chimango Chirtau, the Permanent Representative and the Ambassador of Malawi to the AU. He was accompanied by Amb. Olabisi Dare, Head of Humanitarian Affairs, Refugees and Displaced Persons, African Union Commission.
In his remarks the leader of the delegation said they undertook a visit to Borno State to assess the current situation and as a follow up to the tour of the North East they undertook last year.
“We are very keen on the stability of this country so that we can report back to the heads of government when they meet in January 2018”.
Ambassador Chirtau also used the opportunity to commend the PCNI “We noted a lot of presence from international agencies and local agencies, especially the visibility of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative, we hereby donate 100,000 USD to the PCNI to enable them proceed with the good work they are doing in the NE.”
Responding the Vice Chairman of the PCNI, Tijjani M Tumsah thanked the delegation for the continuous support and advised that the AU should be significantly visible in providing platforms for humanitarian agencies in Africa to learn and interact from crisis like the ones in the North East.
