I will form alliance with North; Yoruba can’t be trusted – Dokubo
Asari Dokubo, a former militant leader, has announced plans to ally with Northern leaders as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential election, a media report has revealed.
This declaration follows what he describes as a betrayal by President Bola Tinubu, whom he supported in the 2023 presidential race.
In a viral video to his followers, Dokubo reflected on his substantial efforts to secure Tinubu’s victory, noting he invested significant personal funds into the campaign.
“I apologize to our fathers because they were not wrong in forming an alliance with the North, and as young men, we will now start that same alliance,” he said.
Expressing his disappointment, Dokubo remarked, “From today, I will work and form an alliance with the North.
President Tinubu betrayed me after I spent all my money and emptied my bank account campaigning for him. The Tinubu I know now isn’t the Tinubu I used to know.”
He stressed the importance of unity between the Ijaw people and the North, asserting, “We will take this message across that only the Northerners can work with the Ijaw people. We can’t work with Yoruba people; they are a betrayal to us. We risked our lives by voting and doing everything, and this is what we get?”
Dokubo’s comments coincide with increasing conversations around an opposition alliance in Nigeria. Political scientist Pat Utomi recently revealed discussions with key opposition figures, including PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Utomi confirmed that these leaders have agreed to collaborate in establishing a new political party aimed at unseating President Tinubu in the upcoming election cycle.
