*As body provides platform for civil participation in election policing

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has laid out a disciplinary measure to deal with erring police officers and men, during the upcoming elections.

It did this while appointing National, Zonal and State Coordinators for the election exercise.

The DEFENDER reports that the Commission has already approved the participation of over 360 of its Staff to depart for the 36 states of the Federation to monitor the conduct of police officers on election duties.

Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations, made this known in a statement he issued in Abuja dated Sunday, February 19th 2023 and copy of which he sent to this online newspaper.

In Nigeria, Police Service Commission (PSC) is the Federal executive body constitutionally empowered to discipline police officers except the Inspector General of Police, among other responsibilities, Ani said in the statement.

The Commission warned that it will sanction any police officer involved in any form of misconduct before, during or immediately after the elections.

According to Ani, the Police Service Commission is determined to ensure that, compulsorily, policemen on election duties conduct themselves within the approved rules and regulations.

In the meantime, dedicated telephone numbers have been provided “for the public to report misconduct or exemplary behaviour of police officers on duty”.

This, the statement added, is to assist Nigerians play a major role in enthroning civil participation in election policing.

Acting Chairman of the Commission, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi (Rtd), will be leading the Commission’s strong delegation as the National Coordinator and assisted by the Honourable Commissioners representing the six geo-political zones as Zonal Coordinators, the statement said.

Also, the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Ifeoma Adaora Anyanwutaku will serve as the Deputy National Coordinator.

“The Commission on Wednesday, February 15th 2023 held a training programme for State Coordinators and also organized a two- day induction course for staff monitors.

“The Commission’s Monitors will benchmark Police conduct during the elections with the approved standard operational guidelines for Police conduct,” he said.
