The Rivers State Police Command has vowed to clamp down on those in possession of arms but refused to surrender them to to the Police within the 21 days ultimatum as directed by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
Nnamdi Omoni, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Rivers gave the warning while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, saying that the state command had been carrying out sensitization and advocacy on the need for people in possession of firearms to surrender them.
He clarified that the Command under the leadership of Zaki Ahmed had set up a taskforce to retrieve the arms in the hands of the people and that the command was presently going to local communities to sensitize them on the need for them to cash on the 21 days window.
According to Omoni, after the 21 days, the Command would have no choice but to forcefully break into hideouts where the illegal arms are secretly kept and recover the arms without prior warning.
He acknowledged that some Nigerians in possession of firearms even when they were licence were voluntarily submitting them for profiling.
The PPRO admonished Rivers people not to disregard the 21 days opportunity because they would have themselves to blame.
