Jega accuses National Assembly of undermining independence of INEC

*Says it lacks power to re-order election

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega on Thursday said the National Assembly lacked the power to alter the sequence of the 2019 elections.

Jega spoke in Abuja at an event put together by the Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth and Development.

According to Jega, the National Assembly’s action undermined the independence of INEC, adding that several sections of the 1999 Constitution clearly stated that the power to organise and set the date for elections remained the exclusive preserve of INEC.

He added that the cost of election would be higher if the National Assembly succeeded in changing the election sequence, Punch reports.
