Senate asks Buhari to split Fashola’s job, give Power to separate minister

The Senate on Tuesday passed a unanimous resolution, demanding the that President Muhammadu Buhari remove Power Ministry from the portfolios currently handled by Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), in order to address the challenges facing the sector.

The resolution followed a motion on the challenges facing the power sector in the country sponsored by Senator Mustapha Bukar (APC, Katsina).

The Senate requested President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a separate minister for the ministry of power and allow Fashola continue piloting the affairs of Works and Housing.

The resolution on the split of the ministry was sequel to an additional prayer by the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Francis Alimikhena (APC, Edo) and seconded by Deputy Minority whip, Biodun Olujimi.

The senators said the ministry under the supervision of Fashola was usurping the duties of power related agencies, thus hindering the quest of the Federal Government to improve power generation and supply in the country.

Other resolutions passed are: “Urge the Federal government to use gas as the source of Energy for the Kaduna Power Project in accordance with the original project concept and the MOU signed with gas suppliers to complete the project; as adequate provision has been made for the project in the 2017 Budget.”
