Zamfara Assembly passes resolution backing establishment of state police

Moriki said the establishment of state police would complement the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal in addressing insecurity in the state and across the country.

The Zamfara State House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting constitutional alterations aimed at facilitating the establishment of state police in the country.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, disclosed this while briefing journalists in his office on the activities of the House.

Moriki said the establishment of state police would complement the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal in addressing insecurity in the state and across the country.

He expressed optimism that the Zamfara State Government would provide the necessary framework and support required to ensure the effective operation of state police if established.

The Speaker also clarified issues surrounding some lawmakers who have been suspended from the Assembly, saying their suspension predated their recent purported defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the lawmakers were suspended on February 26, 2024, following allegations of gross misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, contempt of the House and convening an illegal sitting in violation of the Standing Orders of the Assembly.

He further alleged that the suspended lawmakers were accused of acts bordering on burglary, forcible entry and destruction of public property, including allegedly breaking into the offices of the Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms, damaging Assembly property and gaining access to the legislative chamber, where they purportedly convened an unlawful sitting.

Moriki said the allegations and other related matters had subsequently led to the filing of a criminal complaint against the suspended lawmakers before a court of competent jurisdiction.

He described the lawmakers’ recent purported defection as an attempt to divert public attention from the disciplinary issues surrounding their suspension and create an impression of instability within the Assembly.

The Speaker assured members of the public, particularly APC supporters, that the Assembly remained stable and functional and was fully engaged in discharging its constitutional responsibilities.

He maintained that the purported defection of members who had remained under suspension should not be interpreted as evidence of disunity or disarray within the House.
