China has delivered a fresh geopolitical challenge to the United States, openly backing a multipolar world order and rejecting what Beijing sees as attempts by any single power to dominate global affairs.
The message came at the recently concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where Chinese President Xi Jinping joined Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other leaders for high-level discussions on the future of international relations.
The summit further showcased the growing alignment among major non-Western powers, with China stressing the need for greater international cooperation and a global system built around multiple centres of power.

The latest development comes amid growing diplomatic friction between Beijing and Washington.
China recently blocked consensus on a proposed G20 joint statement, forcing the United States, as chair of the meeting, to issue a separate chair’s statement after Beijing objected to parts of the proposed communiqué.
Among the contentious issues was language relating to navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route.
The developments have intensified speculation that the world is entering a new phase of geopolitical rivalry, with Washington seeking to maintain its influence while Beijing, Moscow and other emerging powers push for a more decentralised international system.
The SCO summit has therefore emerged as another major platform for China to promote its vision of a multipolar world, signalling that the contest over the future balance of global power is far from over.
