EFCC reportedly freezes Osun govt account ahead of governorship election
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed one of the Osun State Government’s bank accounts under restriction less than two weeks before the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
According to documents cited in media reports, the affected account, domiciled with First Bank and allegedly used for the payment of workers’ salaries, has been placed on a “Post No Debit” status by the anti-graft agency, preventing transactions from being carried out.
The reported action came shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the accounts of the Osun State Government and some senior government officials in the run-up to the governorship poll.
Reacting to the development, the governor, through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the move as an attempt to disrupt government activities ahead of the election. He argued that there was no legal basis for freezing the state’s accounts, insisting that the EFCC lacked the statutory authority to impose such restrictions.
A government source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly, confirmed that the account had been restricted and was no longer accessible for transactions. The source also disclosed that Governor Adeleke would address journalists to provide further details on the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the reported restriction, and the reason for the action remained unclear.
The reported development comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
