“Lagos State has lost one of its most distinguished sons of royal pedigree. He was a statesman who played his part with remarkable success,” Olanrewaju said.

A prominent Lagos prince and former Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Charles Aderemilekun Akitoye, is dead. He passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the age of 80.

The family announced his death in a statement, disclosing that condolence visits will be held at his residence on Oduduwa Way, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, on Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, 2026, between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day. Burial arrangements, the family added, will be announced later.

Former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd.), described the late Akitoye as a respected Lagos prince and accomplished public servant. In a tribute titled “Dr. Charles Aderemi Akitoye: A Transition,” Olanrewaju said the deceased lived a fulfilled life marked by dignity and self-respect.

He noted that Akitoye, a prince of the Akitoye-Dosunmu royal lineage and grandson of Oba Akitoye, was widely admired for his intellect, eloquence, and contributions to public service. According to him, the late prince served twice as a state commissioner and remained a leading figure among his peers.

“Lagos State has lost one of its most distinguished sons of royal pedigree. He was a statesman who played his part with remarkable success,” Olanrewaju said.

Also paying tribute, Dr. Usman Dosunmu, popularly known as Oloriekun, described Akitoye as a scholar, cultural icon, and distinguished Lagosian. He praised his humility, integrity, and ability to reconcile people, noting that he was deeply committed to the development of Lagos State and humanity.

Dosunmu, who recalled the deceased’s tenure as Commissioner for Agriculture in two administrations, said Akitoye would be remembered for his dedication, goodwill, and principled life.

In a condolence message, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Akitoye as a pillar within the party. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party noted that the late prince served as Acting National Secretary and was a member of its Board of Trustees.

The PDP commended his leadership style, describing him as a committed public servant who upheld the ideals of democracy and good governance.
