Gen Olanrewaju mourns as Ex-NYSC DG, Gen Sofoluwe, dies

Former Minister of Communications and General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd), has mourned former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Soyemi Ayodele Sofoluwe, who has passed away Saturday December 20, 2025.

Sofoluwe, who would be 81 next month of January 14, 2026, was aged 80 as at the date of his demise in Saturday.

Brigadier General Soyemi Sofoluwe was also Commandant Nigeria Military School, Zaria and Head of Department Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.

Reacting to his demise in a statement personally signed by him on Monday, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd) described the late military colleague as a fantastic and people’s general, who hauled from Abeokuta, Ogun State, South West Nigeria.

“Late Brigadier General Soyemi Sofoluwe was an exceptionally sharp minded officer- Tribute By Maj-Gen Tajudeen Olanrewaju Rtd.

“Brigadier General Soyemi Sofoluwe (Showboy as he was known) was a joyful friend. We worked together in the same office @ ECN in 1966/67. He was my senior clerical officer before I left for NDA in September 1967. He sooner or later left to attend a full university course. We maintained our close relationship on his joining the Nigerian Army Education Corps.

“He served the Nigerian Army Education Corps with utmost devotion and dedication and reached the top ends of his Corps formations. He particularly gave his all in shaping the life careers of the educational and training standards of the NDA cadets under his control during his tenure at the training institution.

“He also improved on the high military discipline expectations and orientation of the NMS boys while serving as the commandant of the school in Zaria. As part of his pivotal rise in the service, he was appointed Director- General, National Youth Service Corps, and he gave a good account of his stewardship.

“Gen Sofoluwe was an exceptionally sharp minded officer and a gentleman. He was a man of strong character with commitment to military discipline,customs, and traditions.

“He exhibited excellent military standings in loyalty and commitment. May the Lord comfort his families and and give them the solace that they need at this time May the Lord accept his soul to rest fully in peace, Amen,” General Olanrewaju prayed.
