Fifty students have been awarded scholarship amounting to N5million by the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria (CCNN).
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Managing Director of CCNN, Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu said each beneficiary would receive N100, 000.
The MD who spoke through Director Aminu Bashir said the gesture was part of their corporate social responsibility.
It was also to complement Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s policy on declaration of state of emergency on education in Sokoto state, he added.
He said the benefitting students were selected from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states studying at various tertiary institutions in the country.
Aminu said out of the 50, slots, 15 were allocated to immediate host communities in Wamakko local government area while 15 were shared among other areas in Sokoto state.
He added that 20 slots were for students from Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Sokoto state Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Sahabi Isa-Gada, noted that the gesture would complement government’s efforts in the education sector.
According to him, the state of emergency declaration had started yielding positive results with increased enrolment.
Alhaji Aminu Hassan who responded on behalf of beneficiaries’ parents, lauded CCNN for the gesture.
He said it would lessen their burden and boost students’ performance.
